Inspired by her mother, a nurse, Sunny Lloyd grew up passionate about helping others. Although she decided not to pursue a career in the medical field, she found another way to help others: becoming an attorney.
"I really gravitated toward law because attorneys give a voice to people who might not otherwise have a voice in the legal system."
A graduate of Defiance High School in Defiance, Ohio, Sunny enrolled in the 3+3 law program with a major in philosophy, politics, and economics and minors in pre-law and ethics. Currently a sophomore, when she graduates in May 2027, she will already have a year of law school under her belt.
A degree from ONU will help her achieve her biggest goal: giving back to her local community.
"I'd like to go back to my hometown and practice law there. There are so many underrepresented communities that being that voice for them would be so helpful. I really want to make the community a better and safe place for everyone."
Involved in 14 different on-campus organizations, Sunny has had the opportunity to gain real-world experience while also exploring her passions. In Mock Trial, she has explored further the various types of law she may be interested in pursuing after graduation. Through marching band, she can continue her passion for music.
In every pursuit, she has the support of her professors.
"I know all of my professors on a personal level, and having people who are for your success all the time is so comforting."
Sunny also recognizes the late Dr. Forrest Clingerman for his support in her academic career.
"He left such an impression on me and is so special to my journey here. Although he's no longer with us, whenever I think of ONU, I think of him."
